Asthma care focused on better breathing

Pulmonary function testing in our Troy office

We offer in-office pulmonary function testing to help assess your breathing and guide your care. Ask whether testing is appropriate when you schedule your visit.

Spirometry is a common lung-function test that measures how much air you can breathe out and how quickly. Testing helps evaluate possible asthma and monitor lung function alongside your symptoms and medical history.

When should you be evaluated?

Asthma can cause wheezing, chest tightness, coughing, or shortness of breath that comes and goes. Symptoms may occur at night, during exercise, with respiratory infections, or after exposure to allergens and irritants. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms, so an accurate diagnosis matters.

What does an asthma assessment involve?

Your evaluation considers symptom patterns, triggers, medications, and breathing-test results. A normal test on one day does not always rule out asthma; repeat testing or specialist assessment may be needed.

Bring your inhalers and medication list. Before a scheduled breathing test, ask our team for preparation instructions; do not stop prescribed medicines unless instructed.

Treatment that addresses airway inflammation

Current guidance recommends treatment containing an inhaled corticosteroid for adults and adolescents with asthma, even when symptoms are infrequent. Relying on albuterol alone does not treat the underlying inflammation.

For many patients, an inhaler combining a corticosteroid with formoterol can provide symptom relief and, when prescribed, daily maintenance treatment. The right regimen depends on age, symptoms, previous attacks, availability, and coverage. Not every combination inhaler can be used for quick relief; follow your prescribed plan.

Keeping asthma under control

  • Review inhaler technique, medication use, and treatment response.
  • Address smoke exposure and relevant triggers, including nasal allergies.
  • Use a written asthma action plan that explains routine care, worsening symptoms, and when to seek help.
  • Arrange follow-up after a flare-up; persistent symptoms or repeated attacks may require specialist care.
When to seek emergency care

Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty, trouble speaking, blue or gray lips, or confusion. Do not wait for an office appointment.
